Get ready to join this childbirth education program that blends the convenience of online self-paced video content and live interaction in a virtual group setting. You can move through course content at your own pace and will also be scheduled for 4 live group sessions led by Emily. The virtual sessions are ~ 2 hours in length. You will have access to course for 3 months. Week 1 – Evidence Based Care & Stages of Labour - What is evidence-based care? - Creating your support team - Power of language and mind - Stages of labour - Eating and drinking in labour Week 2 – Comfort Measures & Advocacy - Creating your birthing environment - Different types of strategies for coping with labour (hip squeeze, water immersion, acupressure, opioids, nitrous oxide, epidurals etc) - Pushing, birth positions and how to protect the perineum - The concept of being “allowed” & informed consent Week 3 – Interventions & Birth Plans - Common procedures/interventions in labour (IVs, breaking the water, vaginal exams and fetal monitoring) - Inductions and cesarean sections - Group B Streptococcus (GBS) - Prelabour rupture of membranes (PROM) or when your water breaks before labour starts - Strategies for advocacy - Creating your birth preferences Week 4 – Hands on Labour Support Practice & Newborn Care - Guided session with real time feedback to practice the different labour support techniques - The golden hour - Common newborn procedures and medications - Feeding your baby - Postpartum planning
